Could it be true that Copenhagen’s iconic Little Mermaid statue is off on her travels? It seems so, as Copenhagen city council, which owns the actual statue but not its copyright, has voted by 36 to 14 in favour of shipping the statue off to Shanghai for World Expo 2010.
The statue will, apparently, sit in a pool of water as a centrepiece at the Expo in China, from April to November next year. The Little Mermaid, Den Lille Havfrue in Danish, was sculpted by Edvard Erikse and can be found in the harbour at Langelinie. It is one of Denmark’s most popular tourist attractions.
Erikse’s grandson told the Copenhagen Post: “They called us over the summer to tell us about the plan. We said no and said they could make a copy and send it to China instead, but to our surprise they chose not to.”
