TOULOUSE-LAUTREC: THE HUMAN COMEDY
17 Sept-19 February 2012.
A major exhibition at the Royal Collection of Graphic Art focuses on Henri Toulouse-Lautrec and the immense contribution he made to the world of graphic art in the late 19th century, and beyond.
Outcast from his privileged background, Toulouse-Lautrec sought refuge in the world of Parisian brothels, cafÚs, circuses and dance halls. Here he was accepted and he set about producing a phenomenal catalogue of work over his short life, documenting the highs and lows of the Paris underworld, with a hitherto unseen grittiness but compassion.
It was his skills as a graphic artist however that made him stand out from the crowd; although short in stature Toulouse-Lautrec became a giant in the art world. To this day his poster designs and use of colour are seen as inspired, and are published all over the world. The museum in Copenhagen pays tribute to this French avant-garde artist and his groundbreaking style.
