Songs from the Cold Seas

Songs from the Cold Seas

Friday, January 1st 2010

Until 6 March 2010. Combining the artwork of two contemporary artists working in Greenland with early documentary photographs from the museum's collection, 'Songs from the Cold Sea' sheds light on Greenland's climate change. Olaf Otto Becker dramatically depicts the melting of the ice-cap while Tiina Itkonen documents day-to-day life in the world's northernmost inhabited region. Their work is set against the back-drop of William Bradford's landmark 1873 book 'The Arctic Regions' - one of the earliest examples of expedition photography and an important reference point for both Becker and Itkonen. Faith, Love and Hope

Faith, Love and Hope

Tuesday, October 6th 2009

6 October 2009 - 7 February 2010. The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art presents an exhibition of 200 photographs taken by activist photographer Jacob Holdt. Holdt has been capturing 'behind-the-facade' images of America since the 1970s, focusing in particular on poor black communities. He has built up a huge stockpile of photographs over the last 40 years, many of which have never been exhibited in public before. The Louisiana has been granted exclusive access to Holdt's archive, and this exhibition offers the viewer a glimpse into an urban world of junkies, ghettoes and homeless people. Behind the despondency and suffering on the streets however, can be seen random acts of kindness, the occasional glimmer of hope. Tues-Fri 11.00-22.00, Sat-Sun 11.00-18.00 more

Their current exhibition presents the original stage-set designed by French artist Fernand Léger for the Ballet Suedois in Paris in 1923. Entitled 'La Création du Monde', and on loan from The Swedish Dance Museum, this boldly coloured set displays the influence that the Cubism movement of the previous decade had on the artist. In addition, sketches by Léger are on view. The museum is located in buildings at Christiansborg Castle which was formerly the residence of the royal family and now serves as the seat of the Danish parliament. Saturday, September 26th 2009

26 Sept-27 Dec 2009. This outdoor photographic exhibition highlights 100 places that are literally in danger of disappearing within the next few generations due to climatic changes and negative man-made influences. Apart from showcasing the beauty of these habitats and describing the people who live there, exhibition organisers suggest ways of reducing carbon dioxide emissions - from a global as well as local perspective. Small changes to daily routines can make a difference; solutions offered relate to renewable energy, energy efficiency, fuel switching and personal sustainable behaviour. Historic City Walks

Historic City Walks

Thursday, July 23rd 2009

Each weekend over the summer, historian Christian Holm Donatzky makes the past come alive for visitors to Copenhagen with his historic city walks. Donatzky first examines the period known as King's Copenhagen (1600-1800) when the city was an important trade centre. However, due to neighbouring wars, disease and fire, the city was almost destroyed. The tour takes in Gråbrødre Torv in Amagertov, the city's best-preserved renaissance house, as well as important 17th century buildings and the royal palace, Amalienborg. From 1800 onwards the city began to flourish once more and Hans Christian Anderson put his capital city on the world map. Donatzky finishes his tours with a visit to Christiansborg Cathedral and City Hall. more

Jakob S. Boeskov: Collection of Prints and Drawings

Saturday, April 4th 2009

4 April - 6 September 2009. Despite his youth, Danish artist Jakob S. Boeskov (born in 1973) has for many years courted controversy in the name of satirical art, and in recent times his work has had profound effects on the political world. In this exhibition 'Collection of Prints and Drawings', Boeskov employs his alter ego Siggimund to "describe a restless and dissipated artist’s life, in which the personal ups and downs are transformed into satire and poetry in a tangled mixture of personal and political statements". Since his debut in the 1990s with his comic strip Flax Letter, Boeskov has exhibited at many venues, including the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Ileana Tounta Gallery in Athens, Frankfurter Kunstverein, ZKM in Karlsruhe, and The Thing in New York. The artist now lives and works between Copenhagen and New York. Tues-Sun: 10.00-17.00 Wed: 10.00-20.00 more
