Emil Nolde and Denmark

Emil Nolde and Denmark

Thursday, January 21st 2010

21 January - 9 May 2010. This exhibition devotes itself to examining the links between the art of German artist Emil Nolde and his relationship with Denmark. One of the first Expressionists, Nolde enjoyed numerous stays in the country at the turn of the 20th century; indeed this Danish love affair even resulted in his marriage to local woman Ada Vilstrup. Nolde embraced the more bizarre, even grotesque elements associated with Nordic folklore and completed over 150 works directly influenced by places such as Lild Strand, Als and Copenhagen. A comprehensive collection of watercolours and drawings inspired by his beloved Denmark are on view. Ordrupgaard (Charlottenlund) is 8 km north of Copenhagen. Directions: take train to Klampenborg or Lyngby Station, then bus 388 to Vilvordevej. From there the gallery is a two minute walk. Tues-Fri: 13.00-17.00 more

Oluf Høst

Oluf Høst

Friday, January 1st 2010

Until 5 April 2010. Oluf Høst (1884-1966) came from the Danish island of Bornholm, a place he was to immortalise in countless paintings over the course of his career. Attracted by mysticism and spirituality, the artists' depictions of island life possess a romantic, almost sentimental dimension. From his studio in Bognemark, Høst captured Bornholm's day-to-day happenings, including fishermen at sea and women gutting herrings on the shore. He was influenced by Harald Giersing and the Danish modernists. This exhibition of paintings in Denmark's Museum of Modern Art celebrates the artist's contribution to the Danish art world. Tues-Sun: 10.00-17.00 Wed: 10.00-21.00 more

Homo Sapiens Sapiens

Thursday, January 7th 2010

7 January - 25 April 2010. The Louisiana Hall Gallery provides viewers with an unusual vantage point from which to view Pipilotti Rist's video installation. The popular Swiss artist has designed low, organic sofas for visitors to lie on while viewing his exhibition 'Homo Sapiens Sapiens'. Reminiscent of the 'Garden of Eden' viewers are transmitted into a colour saturated world inhabited by two floating naked Eve figures. Described by the gallery as a 'mythological tale unfolding in technicolour' the installation alludes to medieval frescoes. Tues-Fri: 11.00-22.00 Sat-Sun: 11.00-18.00 more

Songs from the Cold Seas

Songs from the Cold Seas

Friday, January 1st 2010

Until 6 March 2010. Combining the artwork of two contemporary artists working in Greenland with early documentary photographs from the museum's collection, 'Songs from the Cold Sea' sheds light on Greenland's climate change. Olaf Otto Becker dramatically depicts the melting of the ice-cap while Tiina Itkonen documents day-to-day life in the world's northernmost inhabited region. Their work is set against the back-drop of William Bradford's landmark 1873 book 'The Arctic Regions' - one of the earliest examples of expedition photography and an important reference point for both Becker and Itkonen. Daily: 10.00-19.00 more

Faith, Love and Hope

Faith, Love and Hope

Tuesday, October 6th 2009

6 October 2009 - 7 February 2010. The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art presents an exhibition of 200 photographs taken by activist photographer Jacob Holdt. Holdt has been capturing 'behind-the-facade' images of America since the 1970s, focusing in particular on poor black communities. He has built up a huge stockpile of photographs over the last 40 years, many of which have never been exhibited in public before. The Louisiana has been granted exclusive access to Holdt's archive, and this exhibition offers the viewer a glimpse into an urban world of junkies, ghettoes and homeless people. Behind the despondency and suffering on the streets however, can be seen random acts of kindness, the occasional glimmer of hope. Tues-Fri 11.00-22.00, Sat-Sun 11.00-18.00 more
